Today was an Uphill Day… (Portomarin to Ventas de Naron)
We left Portomarin and knew that we’d be going uphill most of the day, but we never expected what we encountered! After crossing the Mino river, we had to make a choice: go left and encounter an extremely steep climb or go right and have a gradual, easier (?) climb. We chose to go to […]
Still Challenging, but Better… (Ventas de Naron to Palas de Rei)
As we walked today, we think we passed the highest elevation we will encounter. The scenery was lovely! We were making good progress this morning until we came upon a herd of cows being moved. We held back because we weren’t sure we could outrun them or predict where they were going! We did have […]
Our First 14 KM Day (Palas de Rei to Melide)
Today wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be. It took us five and a half hours to walk from Palas de Rei to Melide. That was with a few ups and downs that were a bit challenging, but most of the day was okay. (It was hard to find the right word there…) […]
Our Second 14 KM Day, which was really 16.1 KM (Melide to Arzua)
We got off to an early start, but there was plenty of street lighting as we left Melide. The sun was rising and the clouds turned a glorious pink! Part of it was visible as we rounded the corner at Santa Maria de Melide. This church dates to the 12th century but unfortunately, was locked. […]
No Lengthy Post Today
We walked 14 miles today (24 km) even though we were told we’d be walking 19. We have very sore feet and are crashing I’ll catch up tomorrow! Good night, all!
Yesterday–Arzua to O Pino
This was to be our long day of walking and it WAS! We started out early and the fog was thick. And we walked and walked and walked…for over eight hours. At one point in the afternoon, we saw no other pilgrims on the trail for almost an hour. We questioned if we were on […]
We are SOOOO Close to Santiago!! (O Pino to Lavacolla)
Breakfast this morning was quite noisy as the people were excited to begin walking. Some would arrive in Santiago today, but we had a short day of walking and will arrive at the cathedral tomorrow. An important part of the support system for pilgrims are the kilometer/direction markings. We stopped this morning to capture the […]
We Are In Santiago!!! (Lavacolla to Santiago)
We walked about 3.5 hours today and arrived at the Cathedral! As we walked through town, one guy sitting in an outdoor cafe said, “Well done! You’re almost there!” There was much joy and celebration when we arrived. I actually had goosebumps! I noticed that another pilgrim had gotten his credential already. (He had passed […]
Our Credentials and Compostela
Each pilgrim has a folder called a credential. We are responsible for getting at least two stamps each day to “prove” that we walked the entire way. Today we encountered a man doing stamps in wax. It was so interesting! Once we reach Santiago, we will go to the pilgrims’ office to have the credentials […]
