Day One Walking the Camino

We only had a short distance to travel today (4.5 miles which turned out to be 5.5 miles.) That was a nice “re-entry” to the camino. We had no issues or problems other than very few arrow or shells showing the way. We passed one pilgrim who was seated on the side of the walkway and was administering first aid to his feet. It was not a pretty sight and hopefully we will avoid that! We kept checking the map in hopes that we hadn’t made a wrong turn. Walking in an urban environment was very different for us and we are looking forward to when we leave the cities and towns for the wooded areas. We stayed along the coast and walking along the water meant two things: one, it was flat and NO hills. Two, it was lovely to see the water even though it was low tide. We did have to walk about half a mile up a hill into Nigran to find our lodging for tonight. We are already planning our strategy to return to the ocean as quickly as possible. We are encouraged as we look at the rest of the trip and the amount of walking we must do each day. Today was mostly on sidewalks, boardwalks, and a few pathways.

One of the things we will remember from today is a small boy (maybe 5?) in a stroller with his family. They were walking towards us along the boardwalk when he pointed at us and yelled, “Peregrinos (pilgrims)!” As we passed the family, the father said, “Buen Camino” (the universal greeting) and the little boy yelled, “Buen Camino!”, too! We smiled and said, “Gracias” and continued walking.

    1. There are at least 12 different routes. We chose this one because the elevation changes weren’t as great as the one we did last time!
